USA Toolkit 1.01 - Purpose of the ToolKit

Written specifically for the USA-Iowa TOOLKIT - Spring, 2014

PURPOSE OF THE USA-IOWA TOOLKIT & HOW TO USE IT

SOME BACKGROUND -
In November 2012, PADS (Peer Action Disability Support) applied for a $30,000.00 grant from the Association of University Centers on disabilities (AUCD), to help local self-advocacy groups across Iowa move to the next step in their development. The original grant required us to help self-advocacy groups to become 501(c)3 non-profit organizations by the end of one year or to become stronger in their organizations (before we knew who any of the groups would be). Our grant was one of 5 grants accepted in the US, and PADS got to work in January of 2013. The project was to last for one year. We got a six-month, &quo;nocost&quo; extension to continue our work with local groups to go into June of 2014.

We noticed that no groups signed up for a class on Becoming a 501(c)3 at THE SUMMIT. After THE SUMMIT in May 2013, and our surveying of the groups, we quickly understood that most of the groups had more basic needs like:

After THE SUMMIT, with agreement from our funder (AUCD), who saw the issues as we did, we changed our strategies:

The ORIGINAL grant had four parts:

  1. Conduct a SUMMIT
  2. Provide MINI-GRANTS
  3. Create a giant TOOLKIT
  4. Hold WEBINARS

The REVISED grant has four parts:

  • Conduct a SUMMIT
  • Provide MINI-GRANTS
  • Create very focused TOOLKIT
  • Hold 2 REGIONAL RETREATS
  • The Management Team focused the contents of the USA-Iowa TOOLKIT on: Advocacy (including Self-advocacy and Community Advocacy) Leadership (in meetings and in the community), and Resources.
